Have Pond Cleaning Questions? We Have Answers!
1. Why is a professional Spring Cleanout necessary for my ecosystem pond?
A spring cleanout is essential to remove the buildup of organic debris, leaves, and sludge that accumulated over the winter. This prevents severe water quality issues, algae blooms, and potential fish health problems once the weather warms up in the South Texas area.
2. How often do you recommend scheduling a full pond cleaning?
We strongly recommend a full professional Pond Cleaning (Spring Cleanout) once a year. This annual deep cleaning resets your pond’s ecosystem, ensuring a fresh start and significantly reducing maintenance hassles for the rest of the season.
3. What does your professional pond cleaning service include?
Our service includes completely draining the pond, safely relocating fish and plants, thoroughly removing all debris and sludge from the bottom, power washing rocks, checking the filtration system, and performing any minor Pond Repair needs. We then refill the pond and reintroduce the fish and beneficial bacteria.
4. What is the difference between a cleanout and routine monthly maintenance?
A cleanout is a comprehensive, deep service performed annually to remove major debris and reset the ecosystem. Routine monthly maintenance focuses on upkeep tasks like skimming, filter rinsing, water quality checks, and Algae Control treatments, keeping the pond clear between cleanouts.
5. How are my koi fish and aquatic plants handled during the cleanout process?
We safely and gently net your fish and place them into a temporary holding tank filled with pond water and aeration. Plants are also removed for cleaning and pruning before being returned to the refreshed pond.
6. How long does a typical full pond cleanout take in the Galveston County region?
The time required depends on the size and current condition of the pond, but a standard cleanout generally takes our team one full day. We work meticulously to ensure the feature is not only clean but functioning at peak performance.
7. Do you offer a 'Fall Winterization' service in addition to the Spring Cleanout?
Yes, we offer Fall Winterization to prepare your pond for the cooler months by removing leaves, cutting back aquatic plants, and safely shutting down or adjusting the equipment. This prevents major decay and makes the spring cleanout easier.
8. Will a cleanout solve my persistent algae problems?
A cleanout is the essential first step in effective algae management because it removes the excess nutrients (sludge and sediment) that feed the algae. We then advise on ongoing maintenance and proper Algae Control strategies to keep the pond balanced afterward.
9. Should I attempt to perform a full cleanout myself?
While minor maintenance can be DIY, a full cleanout is best handled by professionals like Brother’s Water Gardens due to the specialized equipment and the need for expert fish handling and filter checks. Improper cleaning can disrupt the ecosystem and lead to long-term issues.
10. What is the benefit of checking the liner and edge during a cleanout?
With the pond empty, we perform a visual Leak Detection check, looking for potential low spots or liner damage. This preventative step allows us to fix any issues before they become costly leaks in the middle of the season.
What Is The Process?
- Some of you know what this entails, but for those that are new to water gardening here is the rundown:
- FIRST (and most importantly!) get your name on the Spring Clean-out roster. We service hundreds of water gardens beginning in the spring, so waiting is NOT your best option!
- We will call or email you (from the info you provide on the info form) to schedule a Pond Profile or to give you your Pond Clean cost.
- You will need to submit your Spring Pond Clean out a deposit in order to get on our calendar.
- Once your deposit is received you will need to complete the Consult Form to provide details of your specific pond needs and to request a Day/Time for your Spring Pond Maintenance
- On Pond clean-out day, be sure to have your garden hose outside, waterfall pump(s), and other components readily available and your water garden electrical outlet turned on.
- Brothers Water Gardens now gets down & dirty with your water feature! We will drain the water (temporarily housing the Fish if you have them). The next step is to give the water feature a quick pressure washing and rinse (we don’t want to remove every bit of the beneficial Bio-Film). Once washed down they will trim back and fertilize aquatic plants, check and replace underwater light bulbs or fixtures, re-adjust rocks & gravel and finally install the waterfall pump. When all of this is finished, they will begin refilling the water feature (and re-introducing your fish if you have them). Any requested water treatment products will be left for you.
- If your water garden includes a pond with fish, upon finishing your clean out we will refill the pond with enough water to re-introduce your fish. For larger ponds, YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FINISHING THE FILLING PROCESS AND PLUGGING IN THE WATERFALL PUMP (We have estimated your labor costs based on this assumption to keep your clean-out costs to a minimum).
